Valentine's day
Valentine's Day is a wonderful holiday for retailers. They are a clever bunch, with their way of attributing love with buying things. They get people to believe that "if you love me then you will buy me..." Many people buy into this lie, and will spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to show how much they "care".
This day can be hard for those without that special someone. For some single people, this holiday brings an awareness to the lonely feelings and lack of self worth they have. People want to be loved and give love in return. It's a natural feeling to have and not a bad thing to realize. Relationships of various degrees are what we need. Even in the animal kingdom, there are examples of what could be considered relationships.
Instead of buying into the lie that love equals gifts on February 14. Let us consider something of greater importance.1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV)
"4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
I am single and have been for as long as I can remember. Sure I would love to be involved in a serious relationship that would lead to getting married, but I am not in a hurry, nor do I want to settle. I have many wonderful people that I know, trust, and love. Though that doesn't exactly help all of the time, it's important to realize not to take my relationships lightly. It's good to live in each season of life, focusing on what we can be thankful for rather on what we don't have.

I wish this was my stop.
I ride the bus for the people watching. In other cities, where public transportation is more integrated in people's lives, you see more of a mixture of the general population. Here in P-town, it's not quite the same. Many don't seem to find our public transportation to be a good option, unless it's the MAX train. Being weird in Portland is nothing out of the ordinary, but the strangeness factor gets turned up on the bus, especially if you ride on bus line #72.
Today as I rode home, the bus driver and another passenger talked about crime and their solution to it. They wanted the "good days" when public hangings were a matter of public spectacle. In their opinion, public executions would, "do our city some good." and "help our government save some money." They also wanted to do away with the pesky annoyances of judges and our legal system, and in its place a rope and the gallows. It makes you wonder what other "great" ideas they have for society.
Another day on the bus, there was an interesting event. It seemed as though two men decided to have a rather excited discussion for all to hear. I don't even know what all the fuss was about. Both were exchanging the n-word at will. Even at one point, one man encouraged the other to "start acting like a n-word", I wasn't sure if that was a point of encouragement or an insult, I don't think he did either. Fortunately, my stop came up and I had to miss all the action. As I was leaving, another passenger looked at me and said "I wish this was my stop."
Oh, the stories I could tell. I will have to keep the bus in mind if I run out of story ideas or get writer's block. It's not always bad to ride the bus, but the strangeness does keep me from riding the bus all of the time. There are nice old ladies, cute babies and people that will tell you nice stories. I enjoy riding my bike instead, the exercise helps me feel wicked awesome.
