Cheers on the bike

Riding to work on my bike continues to be a wonderful experience. The feeling of the wind, rain and sometimes sunshine, feels great. As strange as it sounds, I enjoy the pain that comes with climbing hills. I might be a little crazy, but at least I am in good health.

The other day as I was going on my usual route, I came upon some road construction. There was a flagman telling the cars to come and go, as I approached he had just turned the sign telling me to stop. I was not happy about that, not really mad, more of a slight irritation. Anyway, he noticed me and quickly turned the sign giving me the go. As I passed, he cheered me on saying, "Check this guy out, you're looking good." I smiled and said thanks as I passed. I felt happy. It's always a good thing to get positive reinforcement, and I'll take it no matter who it's from, that is unless you're a murderer.

The pleasures a bike are simple. That is how I want my life to be. Often we get caught up in the living of life that we forget to enjoy it. Sometimes it's good to take things at a slower pace. You don't want to miss out on cool things which may or may not include people cheering for you.

I bought a typewriter.

This is my new typewriter. I bought it today from a woman living in a pink Victorian house. The house certainly stood out, but a perfect fit for Portland. The lady seemed pleased to sell me the typewriter, especially after I told her I like to write.

Some don't see the sense in using a typewriter over a computer. It's slower, not as efficient and doesn't have spell check. For me, I want to feel a connection to the page and to each word I use.

Many of the great writers have used typewriters, I am just trying to follow in their footsteps.

Happy Pi day

Today (3/14) is pi day. I am not a huge math fan, but any day that you can celebrate with pie is a great day for me. Eat pie and have fun with numbers if you want.

Gas prices are going up but so are the miles on my bike.

I have been hearing lately that gas prices are going up. This is not new but maybe we should pay attention. It's funny how we get all worked up over the higher prices but it does not cause a change. It becomes part of our routine. I still can remember when gas was only 87 cents a gallon. (Now I'm sounding old)

It's been about two months in my car-free year. I have been riding my bike and sometimes the bus. I have made a drastic change in my life which is what we need to do sometimes. Now I am not saying everyone needs to get rid of their cars, that is an impossible request. What is possible is to make small changes and realize the need to conserve. For me, at this time in my life, it's something that I can do, and even enjoy. So get ready to spend more at the gas pump. I'll be spending my extra cash buying more bike shorts.

The sun was out, but I had to work

Today the wise weather people said it was to rain today, but then at the last minute they changed their minds. Today was indeed beautiful. While at work I met the fans of the sun. Indeed this time was more than a welcome sign of greater and more warmer days to come.
